Theorem Distelfink Painting by Yoder

This charming theorem painting by well-known Pennsylvania artist Marjorie S. Yoder features a distelfink, a stylized goldfinch that is frequently depicted in Pennsylvania Dutch/German art. The following description of Marjorie Yoder is from the Winter 1983 issue of "Pennsylvania Folklife":

"...Marjorie Yoder...specialist in theorem painting. This craft, a technique in which stencils are used to paint designs on velvet, is not really characteristic of Pennsylvania German folk art, although the craft was practiced in Pennsylvania during the last century. Marjorie Yoder, who lives in Morgantown, is a versatile craftsman who has also taught wood graining techniques at the Pennsylvania Farm Museum. "

The painting on velvet measures 8 inches by 7 inches. It's surrounded by a lightly distressed, grain painted frame in mustard and brown, with corner blocks in mustard. The frame measures 10 1/4 inches by 11 1/4 inches. The cover is excellent quality acrylic; it has a matte finish that does not reflect light and has better UV protection than glass. It enables the vivid colors of this painting to display so beautifully.

The back of the painting includes a sawtooth hanger and intact dust paper. There is a paper label attached that reads "Theorem Painting on Velvet Marjorie S. Yoder 1973 Distelfink bird from an old fraktur". The piece weighs 1 1/4 pounds and is in great condition, ready to hang or prop on a shelf or easel, anywhere you need a pop of color.
